Description: This dataset contains Urbanized Area Boundaries (UAB), large and small, for all urbanized areas within the state of Georgia. Large urbanized areas are determined by a population of 50,000 or greater; small urbanized areas are determined by a population of at least 5,000 but fewer than 50,000. Urbanized Areas (UZA) are defined by the U.S. Census Bureau and composed of census tracts. The UABs are created by adjusting and smoothing the Census-defined UZAs to adhere to guidelines set by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Georgia Department of Transportation. UABs are adjusted within three years of the most recent Census and last until the next Census. UABs for Large Urbanized Areas were coordinated and approved by the governing Metropolitan Planning Organizations then assessed and approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and lastly, approved by the Federal Highway Administration. Small Urban Area boundaries were coordinated by Georgia Regional Commissions and GDOT, and lastly approved by the Federal Highway Administration. The adjusted urban area boundary is to be reviewed and updated by the GDOT Office of Trasportation Data on an approximate 10 year schedule, after each decennial census is complete. Update Schedule: 10 years. *Revisions to the original dataset, first adopted by FHWA in November 2013, have been made to reflect requested changes to the Atlanta UAB in Carroll County as of May 2014.
