Layer: Railroads (ID: 4)

Name: Railroads

Display Field: FIPS

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolyline

Description: This Rail layer was created as an ESRI personal geodatabase line feature class. It contains Rail line features for the entire state of Georgia. Work on this layer began in Fall of 2012. There were two primary data sources used to create this layer. The first is a Rail layer provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) which was created in conjunction with USGS. This layer contained lines generated from train cars mounted with GPS devices. It was a highly spatially accurate layer, but the attribution did not contain ownership information. The second source used was GDOT's own Rail layer which did contain ownership information. Where FRA lines existed, these were used and then attributed with ownership from GDOT's rail layer. Where FRA lines did not exist, the GDOT lines were used and photorevised with 2010 NAIP imagery and ESRI supplied Bing imagery in order to increase spatial accuracy of the lines. Rail lines that could be identified through aerial imagery that did not exist in either the GDOT or FRA layer were also added.
